Being of service to others is one of the highest forms of self-love. Ultimately when we serve another we are serving our own soul. Approaching our own suffering from the perspective of oneness; how we are all connected, can lead us to beautiful acts of kindness in the world. Service can be actively serving others in shelters or centers, lending your talents and skills to organizations that serve others or volunteering to work at events that raise money. Actively participating in the world for the sake of another person, animal or the earth increases our ability to become resilient ourselves.
Another approach to being of service is actively serving as a part of your daily life. Picking up trash on the street when you see it instead of walking by it, letting someone in front of you in the grocery line, letting another driver in easily when traffic is merging. Small acts of service create a happier world and keep you in your heart instead of your head.
Lastly service through intent is a profound way to serve and can be created by changing your thinking during your acts of self-care and daily life. When you are in pain and are caring for your pain, know that by caring for your pain you are caring for another’s pain, someone who is feeling the same as you are. Try and visualize them and see the relief you receive for yourself also reaching them. When you nourish your body with food, with your intent enjoy your meal for someone who is hungry, so that they will also receive the nourishment. Love your children, your family, and your animals with consciousness knowing that your love reaches others who are alone without love. Service through intent changes consciousness and can profoundly effect our choices and how we relate to the world around us.
